MAGALLANES 500
SANTIAGO—CHILE—2019
To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan arrival in Chile and the Americas, the Government of Chile commissioned a brand identity for a series of inter-ministerial activities held between 2019 and 2021. The focus was on highlighting the connection between European and Patagonian cultures, moving away from the traditional “discovery” narrative.
The identity balanced historical significance with a modern design, involving local communities, researchers, museums, the Armed Forces of Chile, and the government itself.
Note: The editorial pieces at the bottom serve as reference examples of how this milestone was commemorated 100 years ago.
The photograph is a portrait of the last Selk'nam people officially registered in Chilean Patagonia.
